As a new member, you are offered a one–time complimentary orientation to familiarize you with the weight equipment. Whether your goal is for sport–specific training or to increase your strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance, our professional staff of certified fitness trainers will be able to work with you to identify your health and fitness requirements and create a customized training program.

Hi, my name is Eddie Lopez. I’ve been a personal trainer and certified through the American Council on Exercise since 1995, and started at South End in 2000. I received a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education from Long Beach State in 1999. But more importantly, in my opinion is experience. My experience started with studying fitness and training with weights 5–6 days a week in 1976 at the start of high school. Seven years later in 1983 I incorporated a strict diet and an intense cardio vascular routine and competed in my first bodybuilding competition at the age of 20. Since then I’ve never stopped training and competed 14 times, most recent at the 2011 NPC Pacific USA and Los Angeles Championships Masters 40+ division, where I took 3rd place in both, at the age of 48. Putting it all together, I can give you an honest and accurate assessment of reaching your goals, children to senior citizens, handicapped, beginner, advanced or competitor. I will give you all the tools you need, but it is up to you to use them. Don’t feel overwhelmed or intimidated. Honestly, it is not easy to use all the tools and use them perfectly, but if you try, I guarantee you will see and/or feel some benefit. All my countless clients have since 1995. Karen is an ACE certified personal trainer since 1995 and one of the first teachers to be AFAA certified as a group fitness instructor. Karen earned a B.A. degree at Azusa Pacific University in communications and combined that with fitness in 1980. Over the years she has taught a variety of classes including: Aerobics, Step, Sculpt, Slide, Core Board, Interval Training and now XCo’s and Flexi Bar. Karen believes that fitness is a life–long journey to enjoy and take you into a healthy future. Karen enjoys being with her family and socializing with her friends.

Sherri is a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor specializing in working with older adults, improving Balance, Strength and Stability. She earned her certifications through the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, UCLA’s Health Fitness Instructor’s Program, AFAA, Cal State University of Fullerton’s FallProof™ Balance and Mobility program, Tom Rutlin’s Exerstrider Nordic Walking program, and TRX – a Total Body Suspension Resistance Exercise Program. Sherri’s goal as a Certified Personal Trainer and a FallProof™ Balance and Mobility Specialist is to increase muscular strength, cardio endurance, flexibility, and develop balance skills so that clients can live a full and active lifestyle.

Christian Phillips, is a Certified Muscle Activation Techniques Master Specialist (MATm), Certified Resistance Training Master Specialist (RTSm), and has been a professional fitness trainer in the South Bay of Los Angeles for 12 years. As founder of Muscle Activation South Bay, Christian has been helping people get what they want from their bodies during this time. He has attained a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis on Sports and Exercise Science while playing football collegiately for West Texas A&M University. As a Resistance Training Master Specialist and Muscle Activation Techniques Master Specialist, Christian specializes in exercise biomechanics and how it relates to muscular function within movement and performance. Through his extensive training experience, he has worked with people ranging in age from 10 to 90 years old, with activity levels ranging from general fitness to professional athletes. His strategic approach allows him to customizing programs based on the individual’s specific needs and goals. He also spends time as a guest speaker and consultant to various health clubs and high schools in the Los Angeles area. Christian is committed to his continuation of study to deliver relevant and effective fitness information and services to the community of the South Bay and beyond.
Melannie Guyton comes to us from the island of Oahu, and has been working in the fitness industry for over 35 years. While attending the University of Hawaii, Melannie taught group fitness, personal training, and later became the general manager of Spa Fitness Center in Honolulu. Her ongoing education keeps her up to date to optimize her clients’ experience. She is certified with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), and World Instructor Training Schools (WITS). Also, Melannie has studied intensively with the STOTT pilates training philosophy to help clients improve overall core strength and posture. In addition, she is a Muscle Activation Technique Specialist (MAT). The MAT professional is trained and certified to restore and improve stability, muscle function, and to strengthen weak muscles. As a muscle and joint specialist Melannie has enjoyed working with a diverse client base, ranging from high school students, college athletes, and senior adults.
